THE NEED FOR TRANSCENDENCE

Theodor DAMIAN*

Abstract: About transcendence, human reason itself speaks, taking into account the fact that reality itself is inconceivable. Yet once aware of that, it helps man to re-enter the house of being, to cultivate the ontological hope in the possibility of returning to the origin, to place the soul at the top of the hierarchy of any values, to see in history and in the continuous present its definitive role, because, as Saint-John Perse says, recalling Hegel, “there is no other history than that of the spirit.” Hence the need to discern between what passes and what remains, between Heraclitus the Ephesian and Parmenides the Eleatic, therefore between the permanence of passing and the permanence of the essence, of being. The logic of transcendence should not need lawyers to argue in its favor. Man only needs to realize that his soul, his consciousness, are a piece of the transcendent, a constitutive, structural, ontological, transcendental element, hence his longing for the transcendent as in a kind of abyssus abyssum invocat.
