A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FAILURE OF CLASSICAL EPIDEMIC MODELS

Radu DOBRESCU1

Abstract. The paper proposes an extended model for predicting the evolution of an epidemic that takes into account the specific characteristics of the Covid-19 pandemic, in which additional population compartments can be highlighted compared to the 3 classic ones: susceptible (S), infected (I) and recovered (R), represented in the S-I-R models. Consequently, the paper proposes an extended S-V-I-H-Q-R model that presents a dynamic transmission rate β(t), modulated by a higher-order statistical indicator: data skewness (Sk). We demonstrate that skewness acts as an early-warning sensor for phase shifts in epidemic dynamics, particularly those induced by socio-political interventions. At the same time, solutions are proposed to overcome the shortcomings induced by the two essential limitations of the SIR model – operating with invariant parameters and the impossibility of representing stochastic interactions.

Keywords: epidemic model, data skewness, statistical indicator, early-warning sensor, scale-free networks, decision-making.
