Abstract. Modern surgical practice relies extensively on advanced biomaterials designed to fulfil distinct structural and biological functions. The eye surgery is no exception, as it likewise confronts similar material-related challenges. Over time, the biomaterials employed in the manufacture of intraocular and contact lenses have undergone continuous refinement, paralleling the increasing clinical demand for such devices. In this article, following a concise overview of the biomaterials commonly used in general and ophthalmic surgery, it present and analyse the findings of a study conducted over a two-year period on a cohort of 30 individuals who wore corrective contact lenses fabricated from various biomaterials available in Romania.

Keywords: biomaterials, eye, contact lenses, silicone hydrogels.
