The academic and scientific community of Romania, the Academy of Romanian Scientists, and the Romanian school of theoretical physics are in mourning at the passing of the illustrious scholar Professor Apolodor Aristotel Răduță, PhD in Physics, Full Member of the Academy of Romanian Scientists, Senior Researcher (Grade I) and doctoral supervisor, a leading personality of Romanian theoretical nuclear physics.
Born on March 6, 1943, in Ulmi commune, Giurgiu County, and intellectually formed at the University of Bucharest – where he graduated from both the Faculty of Physics (specializing in Theoretical Physics) and the Faculty of Mathematics – Apolodor Răduță embodied throughout his entire career the model of the complete scholar, for whom mathematical rigor and physical intuition merged into a scientific work of exceptional value. He obtained his PhD in Physics in 1972 with a thesis devoted to the microscopic study of nuclear collective excitations, a topic that would become one of the major directions of his original contributions.
As a Professor at the Department of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics of the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest, and as a researcher at the “Horia Hulubei” National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering, he educated generations of students, doctoral candidates, and researchers, establishing – through intellectual elegance, depth of thought, and high standards – a genuine school of scientific thinking in the field of nuclear structure.
His scientific work, materialized in hundreds of papers published and cited internationally, covered an impressive range of frontier topics:
– the microscopic description of quadrupole and octupole collective motion;
– the development and generalization of the Coherent State Model (CSM and GCSM);
– new bosonic developments for the quasi-spin algebra and the many-body formalism;
– the study of double beta decay;
– spin excitations and clustering phenomena in nuclei;
– regular and chaotic behavior of bosonic Hamiltonians;
– chiral symmetry phenomena and wobbling motion in triaxial nuclei;
– the full renormalization of the pnQRPA equations.
Through these contributions, Professor Apolodor Răduță provided original theoretical models, highly refined analytical methods, and conceptual interpretations of reference value, engaging directly with the major directions of world nuclear physics and strengthening the prestige of Romanian research in this domain.
Author of several physics books, he was awarded the Șerban Țițeica Prize in Physics of the Academy of Romanian Scientists for one of his highly successful volumes.
As a Full Member of the Academy of Romanian Scientists, he was one of the figures who gave substance, scientific authority, and prestige to the Section of Physical Sciences. His presence in academic life was marked by dignity, balance, and fidelity to the fundamental values of research: truth, rigor, and continuity.
On a human level, colleagues and disciples will preserve his memory as that of an authentic master – generous in ideas, discreet in attitude yet firm in his standards, capable of inspiring through the force of his personal example and through his passion for knowledge.
The passing of Professor Apolodor Aristotel Răduță leaves a profound void in Romanian physics. His scientific legacy remains – a lasting body of work integrated into the universal heritage of theoretical physics – as well as the school of thought he created, which will carry forward his name and spirit.
The Academy of Romanian Scientists expresses its deep gratitude for his entire activity and conveys sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and to all those who knew and valued him.
His memory will remain alive in the conscience of the Romanian scientific community.
In his honor, the Section of Physical Sciences of the Academy of Romanian Scientists will publish a commemorative issue of the journal Annals of Physics and Chemistry in May 2026, in which prominent physicists specializing in nuclear physics will contribute original papers in this field.
