Abstract. A preliminary cost-benefit analysis of the implementation of a mobile biomass pyrolysis system on a representative 1,000-hectare farm western Romania is presented. The evaluation is based on recent European market data and locally adapted assumptions of biomass availability (250 tons/year), plant capacity (5-10 tons/day), and conservative and optimistic market scenarios. The cost includes biomass collection and transportation, capital expenditure amortisation, maintenance, auxiliary energy, labour, logistics and certification, while revenues cover the sale of biochar and bio-oil, the internal replacement of energy via syngas, and carbon reduction credits. If we consider two scenarios, it is observed that the results can record annual profits of over €45,000 in the conservative scenario and over €130,000 in the optimistic scenario, and the recovery periods are 1.7 years and under 1 year. Qualitative risk analysis highlights the relevance of co-operative or hub-based deployment models.
